You Go Too! is a pocket-sized booklet based on the Exhortation by Pope St John Paul II on the Mission and Vocation of the Laity.
The Exhortation Christifideles Laici was published on the 30 December 1988 following a Synod of the bishops of the world, who came together in 1987 to discuss the vocation and mission of the laity in the Church and in the world. Vatican II had set the foundation, “having written as never before on the nature, dignity, spirituality, mission and responsibility of the lay faithful” (CL n.2), and it was the Synod Fathers’ hope that following in the path of the Council, their meeting would help bring about a new awareness among the laity of their unique mission: an awareness of the gift and the responsibility that the lay vocation holds and that given “the pressing needs of the world” (CL n.3), the laity would become attentive to hearing “the call of Christ the Lord to work in his vineyard.” Pope John Paul wrote that all Catholics are “to take an active, conscientious and responsible part in the mission of the Church (CL n.3). The call to mission is addressed to everyone, he wrote. This call, he said, comes from the “owner of the vineyard” himself.
In paragraph 3 of Christifideles Laici, Pope John Paul wrote about the pressing needs of the world today and quoted the "owner" of the vineyard:
“Why do you stand here idle all day?”
– ‘Because no one has hired us’.
‘You go into the vineyard too’ ( Mt 20:6-7).
